Meet Fred

German Shepherd x Cockapoo | 2 Years Old | Neutered | Vaccinated

Fred is an amazing young dog with a huge personality, an even bigger heart and plenty of love to give. He may be bigger than your average doodle, but Fred is completely convinced he’s the same size as a Chihuahua! He’s a wonderfully affectionate, playful and slightly goofy boy who loves being involved in family life.

The Home Fred Needs

Fred is brilliant with children and loves their company. However, because he is a large, very bouncy young dog, we are looking for a home with older, dog savvy children who understand how to behave appropriately around dogs and respect their boundaries.

He certainly doesn’t mean to cause trouble, but when Fred gets excited, he can forget just how big he is!

Training & Other Dogs

Before coming into rescue, Fred was very reactive towards other dogs. Since being with us, he has completed an intensive bootcamp training programme, and the progress he has made has been fantastic. Since completing his training, Fred has not shown any further dog reactivity.

That said, his new family must understand that training doesn’t stop when a dog is adopted. Fred will need an owner who is committed to continuing the work already put in place, maintaining clear boundaries and helping him continue to make good choices.

Fred can also resource guard around other dogs, so this behaviour will need to be understood and carefully managed, particularly around food, toys and other high value items.

Fred can potentially live with another dog, but the resident dog would need to be very well-balanced, calm and socially confident. We would carefully assess any potential match to ensure the other dog is suitable for Fred and that both dogs are comfortable together. His new owners would also need to be experienced and confident in managing a multi dog household, including Fred’s resource guarding.

Fred is also muzzle trained and crate trained. His crate is an important part of his routine and gives him a safe, quiet space where he can switch off and properly settle. We would expect his new family to continue using his crate positively and maintain this routine in his new home.

Grooming & Coat Maintenance

Due to Fred’s coat, regular grooming and ongoing coat maintenance will be essential throughout his life.

Fred has come a very long way with grooming since arriving in rescue and is now doing really well. However, his new owners will need to take grooming slowly and at Fred’s pace, continuing to build on the positive progress he has already made.

His coat will require regular brushing and professional grooming to keep it comfortable and manageable. Potential adopters should therefore be prepared for the ongoing time and financial commitment associated with maintaining his coat.

Fred’s Personality

Underneath that big, bouncy exterior is an incredibly loving boy.

Fred absolutely loves to play, cuddle and spend time with his people. He has so much personality and is the type of dog who will keep you laughing while also being more than happy to settle down for affection.

We are looking for someone who chooses Fred because they understand the dog in front of them not simply because he’s gorgeous.

His ideal owner will be experienced, patient and willing to spend time getting to know Fred properly, understanding his triggers and continuing his training. He needs someone who appreciates that maintaining the progress he has made will require consistency, patience and commitment.

In return, they’ll get an incredibly loving, entertaining and loyal companion.

Fred has already come such a long way since coming into rescue, and we are incredibly proud of his progress. With the right person willing to continue investing in him, we believe he will make an amazing addition to the right family.
